One of the most popular under diagnosed diseases in the dentist office is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is evident by excess oral inflammation, a certain type of bleeding during a routine periodontal examination, and often gum recession exposing the root surfaces of the teeth making them look longer. Bleeding gums when brushing and flossing can indicate active gum disease. Many genetic and lifestyle factors, coupled with oral bacteria, contribute to the exacerbation of gum disease.
