Is your mouth dry?

Saliva production is crucial to keeping your breath fresh and clean. It acts as a natural rinsing
agent and washes away bacteria and other unwanted leftovers down your throat and through
your body.

Dry mouth can be caused by a myriad of things. Here’s a breakdown of possible culprits:

Caffeine - If you’ve got an addiction to coffee, soda, or tea, all that caffeine could be drying out
your mouth. Cut back or add more water to your daily liquid intake.

Medications - It’s possible that your medications could be causing a lack of saliva production.
Check with your doctor to find out if there’s an alternative option for you.

Alcohol - Most alcoholic beverages are acidic, which will cause the pH in your mouth to drop,
and result in oral health issues over time. Also, like coffee, alcohol is a diuretic, which
means that the body processes it in a way that causes excess urination, dehydrating your whole
body - your mouth included.

Smoking tobacco - One of the many downsides of smoking includes, you guessed it, bad
breath! The smoke can dry out your mouth and smokers are also more likely to develop gum disease, which can add to halitosis.

To combat dry mouth, drink lots of water, especially in between alcoholic/caffeinated beverages, as well as the day
after drinking.  Sugar free gum and all natural hard candies can also help with saliva production.
