Our family started mouth taping years ago and here is what I found. We use our mouths to eat, drink, and to talk. It should NOT be used to breathe or to snore. So what are we using to breathe??? The nose of course! Nose breathing is the secret to better sleep and a healthier mouth because:

  • it reduces dry mouth
  • it reduces teeth grinding and TMJ issues
  • it maintains oral microbiome to reduce tooth decay

Also, did you know that nose breathing increases nitric oxide levels, which:

  • enhances memory
  • regulates blood pressure
  • regulates inflammatory response
  • improves sleep quality
  • improves immune function
  • supports gut function
  • improves symptoms of anxiety and depression

Mouth taping is completely safe to use when you can breathe through your nose easily.  If you are congested or have trouble breathing through your nose, do not mouth tape.  If you have had chronic issues breathing through your nose, please see your ENT.

How long do I have to tape for? The good news is, it will become a habit eventually. The best thing you can do is to keep trying and be consistent about practicing nose breathing during the day when you are more aware. Trust me, it will become easier and you will thank me later
