Why We Choose Metal-Free Crowns

When a tooth needs a crown, most people focus on one thing: will it look natural? Fair enough. But at a biological dental practice, we're asking another question just as seriously — what is this crown made of, and how will your body live with it for years to come? That's why we've moved to metal-free crowns.

A crown isn't a temporary fix. Once it's placed, it's in your mouth around the clock, in contact with your gums and saliva, for years. So what it's made of isn't a small detail. It's a material your body has to coexist with every single day.

The trouble with metal. Traditional crowns often contain metal — sometimes a full metal crown, sometimes a metal base hidden under a tooth-colored surface (called porcelain-fused-to-metal). These have been used for decades and they're strong. But metal in the mouth comes with concerns we'd rather avoid. Some people react to certain metals, whether it's true sensitivity or lower-grade irritation. Different metals sitting in the moist, salty environment of the mouth can also interact in ways we'd prefer not to introduce. And over time, metal-based crowns can leave a tell-tale dark line at the gumline as the gum recedes.

Why we go fully ceramic. Modern materials like zirconia and E-max let us skip metal entirely without giving anything up. They're remarkably strong, they hold up to everyday chewing, and they're highly biocompatible — meaning your body is far less likely to have any reaction to them. As a bonus, they look beautifully natural, with a translucency that mimics real enamel and no gray shadow at the gumline.

The biological difference. Our whole approach comes down to a simple principle: choose the most biocompatible option that does the job well. We don't want to place something in your mouth that your body has to fight against or merely tolerate. A metal-free crown does its job — restoring and protecting your tooth — while working with your body, not against it.

Because when something's going to live in your mouth for years, "biocompatible" shouldn't be an afterthought. It should be the starting point.
