Is your child breathing through their mouth at night?

At Dr. Katie To Center for Wellness Dentistry in Katy, TX, biological dentist Dr. Caroline Jones looks at why a child is mouth-breathing, snoring, or restless at night — not just how to manage the symptoms. If the evaluation shows that orthodontic treatment is the right next step, we refer directly to Dr. Bar Nguyen at Dr. Bar Orthodontics, a board-certified orthodontist nearby who screens for airway-related concerns as part of his treatment planning, so your child's care stays coordinated from evaluation through treatment, not handed off and forgotten.

What parents notice

Most parents don't set out to research "airway development" — they notice small things first:

  • Their child sleeps with their mouth open, or snores lightly
  • Dry or cracked lips in the morning
  • Restless sleep, or waking up tired despite a full night's sleep
  • Crowded or crooked teeth coming in
  • Daytime irritability, trouble focusing, or a short attention span
  • Bed-wetting
  • Bad breath in the morning when they wake up

Any one of these on its own isn't necessarily a problem. But together, especially at night, they're worth a real evaluation — not just a wait-and-see.

Why we look at this differently

Most dental offices treat mouth breathing as a habit to correct or a symptom to manage. We start from a different question: why is this happening, and what is it doing to the rest of your child's development? We look for the root cause.

Mouth breathing at night isn't just a sleep issue — it can shape how a child's jaw and face grow, how well they sleep, and how they feel and focus during the day. That's the same whole-body thinking behind everything else we do here, and it's why we look at a child's airway as part of their overall health, not as an isolated dental problem.

How we work together with a trusted referral partner

Dr. Caroline Jones — Biological Dentist
Dr. Jones is a wellness-focused general dentist with over three decades of clinical experience, known for a gentle, individualized approach with children. She brings a root-cause, biocompatible mindset to evaluating what's behind a child's mouth-breathing or sleep concerns.

Our referral partner — Dr. Bar Nguyen, DDS, MS, Board-Certified Orthodontist
Dr. Bar Nguyen previously practiced alongside Dr. Katie at this office and now leads his own independent practice, Dr. Bar Orthodontics, at 6850 Katy-Gaston Rd, Suite A100, Katy, TX 77494. His practice offers braces, clear aligners, and LightForce 3D-printed braces, and screens for airway-related concerns as part of treatment planning. When a child's evaluation points to an orthodontic need, we refer directly to him.

What to expect

When you bring your child in for a mouth-breathing or airway concern, we typically:

  • Do a full airway and jaw exam
  • Evaluate tongue-tie, palate width, and nasal breathing in our office, along with posture, to see whether your child should also be seen by a holistic-minded chiropractor
  • Give you specific things to watch for while your child is asleep, and recommend apps you can use at home to monitor snoring
  • Refer you to our sleep specialist if your child is having severe issues and symptoms

When we refer out: We refer to a sleep specialist if your child needs a sleep study, since it may be covered by your child's medical insurance. We refer out if there seem to be posture or alignment issues, and we refer to Dr. Bar if expansion or orthodontic treatment is needed.

We'll walk you through what we find, in plain language, and make a plan together — including whether an orthodontic referral, a sleep specialist, or a holistic-minded chiropractor should be part of the picture.

FAQ

Is it normal for my child to breathe through their mouth at night?
Occasional mouth breathing — during a cold, for example — is common and usually not a concern. But if it happens most nights, especially alongside snoring or restless sleep, it's worth having evaluated rather than assumed to be a phase.

Can mouth breathing actually affect my child's face or teeth?
Yes. Chronic mouth breathing changes how the jaw and face develop over time, and it's commonly linked to crowded teeth, a narrower palate, and changes in facial growth. This is exactly why early evaluation matters more than it might seem to.

What's the difference between seeing a regular children's dentist and coming here for this?
Most dental offices treat teeth and jaw alignment on their own. We start with a whole-body, root-cause evaluation of what's driving the breathing pattern itself, and coordinate directly with a trusted, board-certified orthodontist if treatment beyond our office is the right next step.

Do you treat the orthodontic side of this in-house?
No — we evaluate and refer. Dr. Bar Orthodontics handles orthodontic treatment, including expansion, and we stay coordinated with them on your child's care.

What age should my child be evaluated at?
Dr. Jones is happy to evaluate children as young as age 1, including checking for tongue, lip, and cheek ties and assessing airway concerns. A first visit with an orthodontist is usually recommended around age 7. If you're worried sooner, call us and we'll talk it through.
