Digital Smile Design: Planning a Smile With Precision

Digital Smile Design (DSD) is a modern approach to cosmetic dentistry that allows doctors to plan a patient’s future smile with accuracy and intention before treatment begins. The process starts with collecting detailed records, including photographs, video, and a digital scan of the teeth. These records allow the dental team to analyze the relationship between the teeth, lips, and facial features, allowing for personalization and uniqueness.

Using this information, the doctor works closely with design specialists to create a smile design tailored specifically to each patient. The goal is to create proper harmony and function. The side effect is having a symmetrical, natural and beautiful smile.

Dr. Luu and Dr. Katie have both earned masterships in Digital Smile Design, giving them advanced training in this planning process. Before any final bonding or restorative treatment is completed, patients experience a “test drive” of the proposed smile, allowing them to preview the design directly in their mouth. That is how we start with the end in mind.

Digital Smile Design also allows for coordinated planning between specialists. Orthodontists, periodontists, and restorative dentists can follow the same blueprint to position teeth, implants, and restorations in the most ideal locations for esthetics, function, and long-term stability.
