When people hear the word "laser," they often brace a little. It sounds intense — like something sharp and high-tech aimed at a problem. But one of our favorite uses of our Fotona laser is the exact opposite of intense. It's gentle, completely non-invasive, and it works by doing something quietly remarkable: using light to help your body heal itself. It's called photobiomodulation, and it's one of the most beautiful tools in modern dentistry.
What photobiomodulation actually is. Behind the long name is a simple idea. Specific wavelengths of laser light, delivered gently to your tissue, are absorbed by your cells — particularly by the mitochondria, the tiny "power plants" inside them. When your cells have more energy to work with, they can do their jobs more efficiently, including the work of repairing tissue and calming inflammation. There's nothing invasive about it. The laser doesn't cut or remove anything — it simply gives your cells a gentle nudge to do what they already know how to do, a little better.
Where it helps with recovery. This is where photobiomodulation really shines. After a procedure — an extraction, gum treatment, or other dental work — your body shifts into healing mode, and we can support that process with light. Gently applied, it may help ease discomfort and support smoother, more comfortable healing. For patients who'd rather lean on their body's own repair systems than reach straight for medication, it's a wonderful option. We want to be honest that it's a supportive therapy, not a magic cure — but as one more way to help you recover well, it's a lovely addition to your care.
Why it fits how we practice. Everything about biological dentistry comes back to a single belief: give the body the right support, and it's remarkably good at healing itself. Photobiomodulation is that philosophy in its purest form — natural, drug-free, gentle, and working with your body rather than against it. It's the same principle behind the red light glowing in every one of our treatment rooms, now delivered with the precision of our Fotona laser right where your body needs it most.
So if the word "laser" ever gave you pause, here's a reason to see it differently. Sometimes, the most powerful thing a laser can do is simply help you heal.
