Why We Think Twice About Root Canals

Say the words "root canal" and most people wince. They've got a reputation — as a procedure, and lately, as a topic of debate online. So where does a biological dental practice land on them? The honest answer is more measured than you might expect: we don't reflexively oppose root canals, but we do think carefully before recommending one. Here's what that means.

First, what a root canal actually is. When the living tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or dies, a root canal removes that tissue, cleans out the inside, and seals it up — letting you keep a tooth that might otherwise need to come out. For a lot of situations, it's a genuinely useful procedure, and we want to be clear-eyed about that.

So why the extra pause? Biological dentistry looks at the whole picture, and a tooth is never just a tooth to us. A treated tooth is technically no longer "alive," and its complex inner structure can be difficult to fully clean and seal. That's why this has become a debated topic — and why we'd rather weigh a few things carefully than treat a root canal as an automatic default:

  • The whole tooth and the whole you. How healthy is the tooth? What's your overall health picture? These matter to the decision.
  • All the options, not just one. A root canal is one path. Depending on the situation, careful monitoring, other treatments, or removal and replacement might make more sense. We'd rather you choose than default.
  • How it's done. When a root canal is the right call, the how matters — thorough cleaning, ozone therapy, careful technique, and the right materials all make a difference.

What this isn't. There's a lot of alarming content online about root canals, and we're not here to add to it. The science in this area is genuinely still debated, and reasonable practitioners land in different places. What we can promise is that we'll give you the honest picture and help you make an informed choice — not a rushed one.

Why it matters to us. This is really biological dentistry doing what it always does: pausing to consider the whole person, laying out every option, and respecting that the decision is yours. Sometimes that means a root canal is the right answer. Sometimes it means exploring alternatives. Either way, you deserve to understand why.

Thinking twice isn't being anti–root canal. It's being thorough — and we think you deserve nothing less.
